Abstract: In this talk I will present different ways to study model complexity for partial differential equation (PDE) based forward and inverse problems by characterizing the information content in input and output data. We show how this understanding can help to develop fast algorithms, explore underlying low dimensional structures, and analyze (in)stability. I will use our recent work on data-driven method for elliptic PDEs (joint work with S. Li and Z. Zhang) and instability analysis of an inverse problem for radiative transport near diffusion limit (joint work with Y. Zhong) as examples.
