Abstract. We first introduce the idea of a soliton and how this name originated as an expression of their remarkable stability. We then give an introduction to the variational approach to proving the stability of such solitons. This provides a bridge to the notion of multisoliton solutions. In closing, we will describe our recent proof of orbital stability of multisoliton solutions to KdV.
