I will explain the essential idea of "topological quantum computing": that quantum computing can be achieved by the braiding of anyons in a topological phase of matter. I will start from the beginning, introducing the Jones polynomial, defining a quantum computer, and showing that these notions are in some sense equivalent! After that, I'll talk about topological field theories as a physical realisation of a quantum computer, and how my research on classifying tensor categories may help us understand the possible range of examples.
