Transport of particulate suspensions and colloids in porous media is accompanied by particle capture and consequent permeability decline. It occurs in oil reservoirs during sea- or produced water injection, produced water disposal in aquifers with subterranean water contamination, drilling fluid invasion causing formation damage, filtration of completion fluid, fines migration during production of heavy oils in low consolidated reservoirs resulting in productivity decline and during sand production control by gravel packs and sand screens.
1. Micro scale population balance equations of suspension transport in porous media with several particle capture mechanism sare derived, taking into account the particle capture by accessible pores, that were cut off the flux due to pore plugging. The solution is size distributions of pores and particles. We prove that the micro scale equations allow for exact upscaling (averaging) in case of filtration of mono dispersed suspensions. The averaged upper scale equations generalise the classical deep bed filtration model and its latter modifications.
2. The classical deep bed filtration equations allow for exact solution. It allows regularization of the ill-posed inverse problem of pore size distribution from the outlet concentration. The results of laboratory data treatment are presented.
3. We also show the results of applications of random walk model and Boltzmann’s equation for colloidal and nano-transport in porous media.
