We expose some recent results in the surface theory in
three-dimensional Lie groups obtained by methods of the spinor (or
Weierstrass representation). In particular, by using the spectral
theory of the corresponding Dirac operator we derive a generalization of
the Willmore functional, study some of its properties and related
variational problems and discuss its conjectural relation to the
isoperimetric problem.
